LPY Base Camp Training & Fitness Recommendations

EVEREST BASE CAMP

The trek to Everest Base Camp is one of the most well-known treks in the world. This hike includes a wide variety of landscapes, including lush valleys, glaciers and snow capped Himalayan peaks.

On this adventure you will be joining a community of incredible mountaineers amongst the beautiful, spiritual Nepalese people.

You can expect this to be one of the best experiences of your life.

You will be challenged physically and mentally, while being supported by a professional guide company, an international climbing community and amazing Sherpas along the way.

KATHMANDU

Our adventure will begin and end in Kathmandu. This town is the capital of Nepal and considered the gateway to the Himalayas. Since every person trekking Everest passes through this city you will be surrounded by an international hiking community. In addition, this is a center for Hindu and Buddhist culture in Nepal.

You must arrive to Kathmandu by Nov 13th. If traveling directly from the United States it is recommended to arrive on Nov 12th. This extra day will allow you to better adjust to the time change and offer a buffer for potential flight delays.

*Let Tauni know if you would like to arrive early on Nov 12th to Kathmandu, arrangements can be made on your behalf.

THE TREK

We are setting out on a 10-day trek to Everest Base Camp. I have customized this itinerary to maximize our adventure, utilize our time efficiently and provide optimal comfort along the way.

Our mid-November trek will provide moderate temps and less crowds. During this time of year we can expect dry days, clear skies for beautiful views with daytime temps ~50F. That temp will drop as we get to higher elevation.

Accommodations will be in hotels and Sherpa-run Teahouses. You will NOT be sleeping in a tent. These accommodations are considered to be the ‘luxury’ option for our adventure.

Our trek will conclude with a HELICOPTER return from Base Camp to Kathmandu. Seeing Everest and Base Camp from the air after such a long journey will be the absolute best way to complete our trip.

Hiking distance  will range from 4 to 10.4 miles per day, with the highest elevation on our hike being 18,225ft.

We will have 2 acclimatization days, Day 4 & Day 7. On these days you will rest, explore the town, enjoy short hikes to near-by viewpoints, visit shops and cafes.

  • Day 1 – Pre-trip meeting in Kathmandu
  • Day 2 – Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, hike to Phakding
    • 4.8 miles, 4 hours hiking, elevation range 9,320 – 8,560 ft

    • 1 miles, 3 hours hiking, elevation range 16,860 – 18,225 ft

We will be supported by experienced English-speaking, government certified mountain guides throughout our entire trek. Our guides are trained in mountain safety and will carry first-aid and a satellite phone at all times.

Not only will our guides ensure our safety along the route, they will also teach us about the history and nature of the region along the way.

Sherpas will carry 12.5kg (27.5lbs) of your personal belongings, and provided sleeping bag, along the route in a provided duffle bag. You will only have access to these items at camp.

You will hike each day with just your day pack!

We will be VERY well cared for. With 3 full meals daily (food restrictions can be accommodated) and unlimited purified drinking water.

ACCOMODATIONS

Hotels and Teahouses along our route will be cozy & basic, considered ‘luxury’ accommodations for our trek. You can expect wifi, toilets, showers and communal areas. These accommodations will allow you to experience local hospitality, lifestyle and culture.

Each person will have their own bed and will most likely be sharing a room with one other person. It is possible to have more than 2 people in a room in some locations.

NEPAL TRAVEL

Flights should be booked to and from Kathmandu, Nepal. Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM).

Flights must arrive to Kathmandu on 11/13 before 5pm** and depart from Kathmandu on 11/23.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

It is not required to have travel or mountaineering insurance for this trip, but it is highly recommended.
